Ford 5R55W & 5R55S Transmission Fluid Fill Adapter

This is a required tool to fill or add fluid to the 5R55W automatic transmission used on 2003-newer Explorers. Ensure that the vehicle is driven until the transmission reaches operating temperature and that it is level. With the transmission in Park and the engine idling, remove the oil level check plug from the bottom center of the transmission pan. There are two plugs, one within the other, and the oil check plug is the center one with the 3/16" allen. When the transmission is full, the fluid should just trickle out of this hole.

First, remove the inner fill plug from the transmission. Use a wrench to hold the outer nut to prevent draining all the fluid. Next, install the SST-6604 tool. Proceed to fill the transmission to the correct fluid level, adding fluid in small increments and continually checking until the fluid is slowly dripping. Once the desired level is reached, remove the SST-6604 tool. Some leaking is normal and should be allowed to occur to ensure the proper level is attained. Finally, reinstall the inner fill plug in the transmission.
